Kaohsiung, Aug. 4 (CNA) The Animal Rescue Team Taiwan (ARTT), a non-profit civil group devoted to animal protection, established an online platform on Monday to help rescue animals affected by the deadly gas explosions that jolted Kaohsiung late last week. The series of blasts that began just before midnight on July 31 and killed or injured more than 300 people, also affected stray dogs and cats and pets with owners, the organization said. Those animals that were injured or left homeless are being ignored, however, because of the priority to help human victims recover and rebuild their lives, it said. Working with local animal hospitals and other animal rescue groups, the ARTT set up the rescue platform to help find shelter for homeless animals in the explosion-affected area, it said. The ARTT also called on people to report animals that may have been injured during the deadly explosions so that they can be given medical treatment in time. It also reminded pet owners to spend more time with their animals if they were badly startled during the explosions and have begun developing abnormal behavior such as shaking with fear, showing shortness of breath or changing their eating habits.
