Taipei, Aug. 7 (CNA) Tea and liquor remain the most popular Father's Day gifts in Taiwan this year, according to a study released ahead of the occasion, which is celebrated Aug. 8. The research, based on the frequency gift items pop up on the Internet, found that the second-most popular presents for fathers are smartphones, the same as last year's results, the OpView cloud monitoring platform said in a statement earlier this week. Accessories such as ties, sunglasses and watches took third place, up four notches from last year, OpView analysts said. Briefcases, wallets and furniture were the new popular gift options this year, squeezing out electric razors and health food, they added. The analysts noted that the original intention of Father's Day is to remind people to spend more time with their parents. "It's not just about presents and eating out. It is the heartfelt gratitude and actions that count," they said. The results are based on a computer screening of 2.01 million netizen posts on Father's Day presents two months ahead of the occasion. The 10 most popular gifts were selected from discussions on over 1,000 social networking websites including blogs, BBS and Facebook, the OpView said. The other most popular Father's Day presents of the year are laptop and tablet computers, insurance, cameras, bicycles and stereo equipment. (By James Lee)
