Acer posts quarterly profit for second time in a row

Taipei, Aug. 7 (CNA) Taiwanese computer maker Acer Inc. on Thursday reported a net profit for the period April to June, its second consecutive quarter in the black, citing positive results of its turnaround plans. The company posted second-quarter consolidated revenue of NT$81.34 billion (US$2.72 billion), a 9 percent drop year-on-year but up 6 percent from the first quarter. Its Q2 operating income was NT$662 million and after-tax profit was NT$485 million, which translated into earnings per share (EPS) of NT$0.18, the company said in a statement. With an operating margin of 0.81 percent in the April to June period, the company expanded from 0.17 percent in the first quarter and recorded its highest quarterly margin since the second quarter of 2011. The company said its gross profit of NT$7.53 billion was also the highest since the second quarter of 2013, as it reduced its second-quarter operating expenses by 14.7 percent year-on-year through sensible cost control. For the first half of 2014, Acer's consolidated revenue totaled NT$158.06 billion, down 12.8 percent from the same period of last year. Its operating income was NT$790 million, with after-tax profit of NT$486 million and an EPS of NT$0.18. Acer said it is optimistic about its turnaround progress and expects its third-quarter revenues to maintain the growth momentum, based on its back-to-school promotions and worldwide release of new products scheduled for the second half of the year, Acer shares ended up 1.26 percent at NT$24.05 Thursday in Taipei before its announcement of its second-quarter financial results.
