A road pavement collapse and a gas leak took place in Kaohsiung’s Chienjin and Chienchen districts respectively on Saturday and were well under control, said the local police. No injuries were reported in these two accidents.

A pavement collapse was reported at a construction site in Kaohsiung Chienjin District Saturday and the damage was contained after construction workers backfilled the two meter-deep sinkhole. Traffic controls were in place to prevent greater damages.

The pavement collapse took place at the intersection of Chenggong Road and Chienjin Second Road, leaving a giant hole about 4 meters in diameter and 2 meters in depth. Sub-base erosion was blamed for the damage. Traffic lights and signs next to the sinkhole fell with the collapsed pavement.

Early Saturday, a methane gas leak was reported at the intersection of Shinsheng Road and Kuojian road. The fire department poured water down the road to reduce the density of gases and took the necessary precautions for safety. Competent authorities are looking at the incident and the source of a gas leak.
