Taipei, Aug. 9 (CNA) Residents of central and southern Taiwan should be on high alert against persistent heavy rainfall from now until Aug. 13 due to strengthening seasonal winds, the Central Weather Bureau said Saturday. The bureau has issued an extreme torrential rain warning for Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung, saying the accumulated rainfall in those southern areas could exceed 350 millimeters in a 24-hour period. Residents of those areas are advised to be on the alert against mudslides, flooding and rockfalls, forecasters said. They also cautioned against lightening and high wind gusts across the country. In addition, heavy waves are likely along the southwestern, southern and eastern coastlines of Taiwan, the bureau said, warning people to be careful when engaging in water activities. The inclement weather could ease off after Aug. 14 as the seasonal winds weaken, forecasters said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
