Taipei, Aug. 12 (CNA) A moist air current dumped torrential rain on southern Taiwan on Tuesday, forcing the closure of schools and offices in Tainan and Kaohsiung, where sporadic flooding has been reported. The Water Resources Agency issued a level 1 flood warning for Tainan and Kaohsiung and a level 2 warning for Pingtung County. While government agencies and schools in Tainan were closed on Tuesday morning because of the heavy rains, Kaohsiung authorities decided not to suspend classes and work in government offices until the afternoon. According to the Central Weather Bureau, the areas receiving the most rainfall in the 13 hours between midnight Monday and 1 p.m. Tuesday were Tainan's Xigang and Anding districts, where 318 mm and 313 mm of rain had accumulated, respectively. Liouciou Township in Pingtung had been hit with 302 mm of rain during the same period, and Kaohsiung's Dashe, Renwu and Hunei districts reported accumulations of 249 mm, 239 mm and 238 mm, respectively, according to bureau data. Tainan's disaster operations center said it had evacuated 70 people as a precaution since Monday night, including 32 residents of an education and nursing institution for the developmentally disabled.
