Taipei, Aug. 12 (CNA) Taiwan has revised and upgraded standards for permissible energy consumption for new vehicles by an average of more than 15 percent, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said Tuesday. It also imposed an overall total energy consumption control a day earlier. The ministry, along with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, published the revised measures in line with guidelines from the Executive Yuan on sustainable energy policies and in response to calls from the international community for greenhouse gas emission reductions. The Bureau of Energy under the MOEA said the revised measures will take into consideration the practices in the United States and the European Union in introducing total consumption control mechanisms, starting with motorcycles in 2016 and moving on to other types of vehicle the following year. According to Taiwan's Energy Administration Act, vehicles that fail to comply with the standards of permissible energy consumption shall not be allowed to be imported or sold in the domestic market.
