Taipei, Aug. 13 (CNA) Extreme torrential rain could continue across Taiwan throughout Wednesday, with southern Taiwan likely to be the hardest hit, the Central Weather Bureau said. The cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung -- which were forced to close schools and offices on Tuesday due to downpours -- and Pingtung County might see accumulated rainfall of over 350 millimeters in a 24-hour-period, forecasters said. Residents in those areas are advised to be on the alert for rockfalls, lightning and high wind gusts, forecasters said. The torrential rain could continue to hamper post-disaster relief in Kaohsiung in the wake of deadly gas explosions on July 31 that damaged drainage systems, resulting in severe flooding. Central Taiwan could also see heavy rainfall, while northern and eastern Taiwan might experience occasional thunderstorms, according to the bureau. Heavy waves, meanwhile, are likely along the southwestern, southern and eastern coastlines of Taiwan, the bureau said, warning people to be careful when engaging in water activities. The inclement weather could ease off after Thursday as the seasonal winds weaken, forecasters said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
