The PC market will soon welcome a second wave of PC replacement. Institutional investors believe that Acer (2353) and Asus (2357) soon release a legion of new notebook products and will have a chance to boost market share to second and fourth among the world’s top five brands, respectively.

Institutional investors indicated, the first wave of worldwide PC replacement rendered 7.8 million PCs obsolete. This wave was driven primarily by commercial users and government purchases delayed since last year led by developed countries in Western Europe and North America. This will also prompt an early start of “back to school” demand in September.

Taiwanese manufacturers expect the second wave of replacement to continue with emerging markets and have observed a continuing increase of disposable assets accumulated by local consumers. “Self-replacement” demand will initiate at the end of this quarter and continue gaining momentum around October of this year.

Since market demand for PC replacement is strong, Asus CEO Jerry Shen recently stated, the company will promote “hero products” with Microsoft and Intel from the end of September to early October.

Acer will gradually introduce new 15 inch and 17 inch Aspire V Nitro notebook products in designated European and Asian countries.

Institutional investors pointed out, PC replacement demand driven by the termination of Windows XP support remains strong. Coupled with the release of Windows 9 next year, the overall replacement trend will continue to the end of 2015 or the start of 2016.
