LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) -- The Slovenian president has proposed political newcomer Miro Cerar as the crisis-stricken eurozone country's next prime minister.

President Borut Pahor's nomination on Tuesday has to be approved by the Slovenian parliament at an Aug. 25 session.

Cerar's new center-left SMC party convincingly won parliamentary elections in July, but needs backing from at least two other parties to form the government.

Slovenia plunged into financial turmoil during the eurozone debt crisis. Once the most prosperous of the eastern European states, the small Alpine nation narrowly avoided international bailout.

Cerar, a legal expert who is the son of Olympic gymnastics medalist Miroslav Cerar, has opposed the privatization of some state-run companies as proposed in an EU-backed rescue package.
