Shipments of 4K2K high definition television panels have hit another peak. According to NPD DisplaySearch’s monthly large-area TFT LCD display panel shipment report, 1.07 million 4K television panels shipped in July or 13% growth compared to June. Overall television panel shipments for July totaled 2.1 million units and the shipment penetration rate for 4K2K display panels was 8%. Innolux (3481) maintained its global leadership position in 4K2K display panels with a 36% market share compared to LG Display at 23%, Samsung Display at 21%, and AUO (2409) at 11%.

NPD DisplaySearch believes, the 4K2K market is gradually expanding from China to the global market. At the same time, Korean and Taiwanese display manufactures are currently adding wide color gamut specifications to 4K2K display panels across the board. Under these new specifications, the color gamut of each pixel broadens as the number of pixels increase with higher resolution. Wide color gamut in 4K2K brings consumers more pronounced visual effects. This also means that average display panel pricing will rise due to higher specifications.

NPD DisplaySearch pointed out, Innolux maintained its leading global position in terms of 4K2K television displays in July with a 36% market share. Taiwanese panel manufacturers Innolux and AUO accounted for a 47% market share of the global 4K2K television panel market.

Stimulated by proprietary brand support and aggressive expansion in the Chinese market through technology such as RGBW4 color 4K, Korean panel manufacturers significantly increased their market share from 19% in the beginning of the year to 44% in July. The threat to Taiwanese display panel manufacturers is becoming increasingly evident. Starting next year, Samsung plans to combine 4K display panels with curved television panels and may bring more turbulence to the global 4K market.

In addition, local Chinese manufacturers are also moving gradually into 4K. The market share of these companies in terms of 4K display panels rose from 5% in June 2014 to 7% in July.
