TRIER, Germany (AP) -- World champion and series leader Sebastien Ogier crashed into the Mosel vineyards in the last of the opening six stages in the Rally of Germany on Friday, handing the lead to Volkswagen teammate Jari-Matti Latvala.

Ogier also crashed on the opening day of last year's German rally. He will receive a 10-minute penalty, effectively ruining his hopes of winning here this year.

Latvala, winner of three rallies this season, opened a 37-second lead over Kris Meeke in a Citroen.

Last season's winner Dani Sordo in a Hyundai was 42.6 seconds behind in third.
