UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The British ambassador to the United Nations says he hopes the Security Council will be able to unanimously adopt a resolution on the situation in Gaza "in the next few days."

Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, whose country holds the council presidency this month, gave reporters no details Friday.

The Palestinians had been hoping to see a Security Council resolution as early as this week to support the current cease-fire.

U.N. diplomats have been working on merging a draft resolution by Jordan with elements from Britain, France and Germany as well as elements from the United States.

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour said Thursday that a resolution that includes an international monitoring mechanism would be a useful deterrent to more fighting, but that disarming Gaza is "not realistic."
