Taipei, Sept. 1 (CNA) The expansion of Taiwan's manufacturing activity slowed in August, according to the latest data from the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER), a local economic think tank. The purchasing managers index (PMI) for August declined 3.1 points from the previous month to 55.4, the first month in which it dropped to below 56 since it hit a high of 60.6 in March, the CIER said Monday. However, a PMI reading of above 50 still indicates expansion in manufacturing activity, while a figure below 50 signals contraction. (By James Lee)
