CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) -- Italy's foreign minister has praised Moldova for forging closer ties with the West.

Moldova's pro-European government signed a trade agreement with the EU in June.

Minister Federica Mogherini, who will be the next EU foreign affairs chief, spoke on Monday after a closed-door meeting during which she, the foreign ministers of Lithuania, Malta, Romania, Croatia, and other EU officials discussed regional issues.

Moldova's trade agreement with the EU angered Russia, which banned the import of Moldovan fruit and some vegetables. But Moldova's government has been trying to maintain its good relations with Russia, which it relies on for gas and where some 300,000 Moldovans work.

Mogherini praised Moldova for choosing "the path of going toward the West but of also maintaining good relations with the East."
