Taipei, Sept. 2 (CNA) Political donations to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Taiwan's largest opposition party, were 4.7 times those of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) in 2013, according to figures on political donations to political parties published Tuesday by the Control Yuan, the nation's highest watchdog body. Political donations to the DPP totaled NT$132.28 million (US$4.42 million) last year, compared with donations of just NT$28.16 million to the KMT, according to the figures. But the expenditures of the DPP amounted to NT$121.34 million last year, so that it recorded a balance of only NT$10.94 million in terms of donations. The KMT's expenditure totaled NT$21.26 million, resulting in a balance of NT$6.9 million. Eastern Source Construction Scaffolding Engineering Ltd. was the biggest contributor to the DPP last year, making two donations -- NT$2.68 million and NT$200,000 -- to the party. In comparison, Ta Ching Securities Co. and Ta Ching Bill Finance Corp. were the biggest donation companies to the KMT, each giving more than NT$3 million. The Taiwan Solidarity Union received political donations of NT$13.27 million, but only spent NT$530,000, leaving a balance of NT$12.73 million, even bigger than that of the two major parties. The New Party received donations of more than NT$2 million, and recorded a negative balance of NT$26,000 after spending NT$2.03 million. The People First Party received donations of more than NT$2.9 million, with a balance of NT$230,000 after spending NT$2.66 million. (By Justin Su and Lilian Wu)
