Taipei, Sept. 2 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou said Tuesday that democracy and the rule of law are core values being pursued by the people of Hong Kong and that Taiwan is supportive of their quest for universal suffrage. Ma, who is also chairman of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT), made the statement at the party's weekly meeting, according to a KMT member who was there. Taiwan is highly concerned and supports Hong Kongers' desire for fundamental rights, democracy and rule of law, Ma said, according to the KMT member. Ma also said it would be wise for the Hong Kong government to show tolerance for different ideas and opinions, while seeking common consensus through rational dialogue, the KMT member related. Through such a peaceful approach, the Hong Kong government will be better positioned to meet public demands, reduce social unease and gain the long-term support of the Hong Kong people, according to the party member. "We will continue to keep a close eye on the situation in Hong Kong and express our support for Hong Kongers' pursuit of democracy and the rule of law," Ma was quoted as saying.
