53 dead, 83 missing: update of Weiguan rescue

53 people dead and 83 were still believed to be trapped in the rubble of the collapsed 16-story Weiguan Jinlong building as of 9 a.m. Thursday, according to the agency, as rescue continues on the sixth day after an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit southern Taiwan at 3:57 a.m. on February 6.

Heavy machinery has been ordered to remove rubble from the toppled Weiguan Jinlong residential building located in the Yongkang District of Tainan.

At least 55 people have died after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan, according to the latest figures released by the National Fire Agency. Of the 55 people confirmed dead, 53 were killed in the collapse of the Weiguan Jinlong apartment complex in Tainan's Yongkang District, according to the agency.

The two others died in the city's Gueiren District.
