Earthquakes hit Taiwan late Wed. into Thu.


A magnitude-5.6 earthquake occurred offshore Hualien at 11:17 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a magnitude-5.5 quake seen as a separate one offshore Taitung, according to the Central Weather Bureau. Two dozens of felt aftershocks followed the quakes, including a magnitude-4.7 aftershock.

No injuries were immediately reported. The epicenter of the first quake was in the sea 34.9 km northeast of Hualien County government building at a depth of 10 km; the second one was in the sea 57.5 km northeast of Taitung County government building at a depth of 18.2 km resulting from separate two tectonic plate movements.

The bureau reminded the public that aftershocks can be expected in the coming days.
