Tsai names new DPP official

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday named Hung Yao-fu as the new secretary-general of the Democratic Progressive Party at the first party meeting since she began combining its chairmanship with the presidency last week.
Hung’s predecessor, Joseph Wu, was sworn in as secretary-general of the National Security Council last Friday, on the same day as Tsai and other new government officials.
It had been known for some time that Tsai would remain as DPP leader after becoming president, and Wednesday saw her first appearance since combining the two positions. She chaired a meeting of the DPP’s Central Executive Committee.
President Chen Shui-bian also served as concurrent DPP chairman for a while, while President Ma Ying-jeou held the position of Kuomintang chairman for some part of his presidency.
Hung, who also uses the English first name Fred, was deputy secretary-general of the DPP and, before that, manager of Tsai’s office.
The new president praised his local and election experience as well as his organizing capabilities. Hung carried major responsibility, and whether or not the DPP would be able to change Taiwan would depend on the performance of people like him, Tsai was quoted as saying.
At Wednesday’s meeting, Tsai also took the oath for a new term as party leader. In her address, she emphasized the need for reform and the responsibility of the DPP to be a different governing party. The DPP was founded in 1986, and ruled Taiwan from 2000 to 2008, but without a majority at the Legislative Yuan.
