Ex-Rebar chair reportedly killed in car accident

Former Rebar Group chairman Wang You-theng was reportedly killed in a car accident in California on May 27 local time.

According to an ABC7 news report, two people were killed in a fiery multi-vehicle crash on the 10 Freeway in West Covina, California early Friday morning local time.

The report quoted California Highway Patrol as saying that five cars were involved - a semi pulling a container, Lexus SUV, Toyota sedan, Audi and a Toyota pickup truck.

The report said that two people were killed - one person from the Audi and one from the Toyota pickup. A third person, a woman, was rushed to a local hospital with injuries, and she was expected to be OK, the report said.

According to South Pasadena Patch website, the one killed in Audi was You Wang, 89, and the female driver, suffered only minor injuries.

The two people in Audi were reportedly Wang You-theng and his wife, Wang Chin She-ying. They fled the country on Dec. 30, 2006, just days before prosecutors began an investigation into the Rebar Group embezzlement scandal. They lived in the US, and were on Taiwan police’s most-wanted list.

Taipei Chamber of Commerce director-general Wang Ying-chieh told reporters that Wang You-theng sometimes called him and the most recent phone conversation happened on the day of the accident. Wang Ying-chieh said that Wang You-theng was concerned about Taiwan’s economy and the country’s political situations after the power transition, and that he especially cared about the litigation relating to the embezzlement scandal that implicated his children.
