Flood warning issued for Tainan, Taitung

As intense showers continue to lash southern and eastern Taiwan, Water Resources Agency under the Ministry of Economic Affairs on Thursday issued a Level 1 flood warning for Tainan and Taitung.

Typhoon Megi, the third severe storm to strike Taiwan in two weeks, battered the island with torrential rains and damaging winds on Tuesday, leaving four people dead, 527 injured, and over 1 million households without power, according to the figures released by the Central Disaster Emergency Operation Center (CDEOC).

Heavy rains brought by the powerful typhoon also left many areas in Taiwan with flooded streets.

While the powerful storm has left Taiwan on Wednesday, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) is predicting more rain in the coming days and has warned of localized torrential rains in parts of southern Taiwan.

Water Resources Agency has on Thursday issued a Level 1 flood warning for Tainan’s Anping, Annan, Xigang, Qigu, West Central, North, South Districts and Taitung’s Taimali Township, while Tainan’s Rende, Madou, and Anding Districts are on Level 2 flood warning.

According to the bureau, Level 1 flood warning is issued when a flood is occurring, while Level 2 warning is issued when flooding is imminent, generally within the next three hours.

The bureau has called on residents in these areas to take extra precaution due to potential landslides and serious flooding caused by torrential rain.
