This year’s 18th typhoon, Chaba, is moving north towards Okinawa and may leave Taiwan alone this time, after the island was battered by three severe storms in the past two weeks.

According to the latest Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecast, Chaba is currently moving in a northerly direction headed towards Japanese island of Okinawa, and is expected to have less impact on Taiwan in the coming days, giving the typhoon-weary island a break from another damaging storm.

However, the rain soaked island is expected to receive brief showers throughout the weekend, especially for southern and eastern parts of Taiwan as a low pressure system approaches, while central and northern parts of Taiwan may experience scattered thundershowers due to the afternoon convection, the bureau said, advising the public to keep their umbrellas handy over the weekend.

Meanwhile, the ultraviolet index forecast on Friday indicates high levels of ultraviolet rays across Taiwan. The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has reminded the public to take protective measures against possible harm from UV radiation.

The UV index forecasts a radiation level reading of 7 across the island Friday. According to the EPA, readings of between 6 and 7 indicate high UV levels, in which sunburn can occur within 30 minutes of sun exposure.

The EPA has cautioned the public to avoid being outside between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when the UV levels tend to be at the highest, and take necessary sun protection measures when going outdoors.
