EVA Air apologizes for typhoon flights

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – EVA Airways Chairman Steve Lin apologized to his staff for having a dozen of the airline’s flights land during Typhoon Megi earlier in the week, reports said Saturday.
The airline was facing an investigation by the Civil Aeronautics Administration after passengers complained that EVA was risking their lives as well as those of its own staff. Pilots reportedly wanted to form a labor union of their own in reaction to the typhoon flights.
Lin wrote a letter of apology to staff at EVA which media published Saturday.
In the message, the chairman said the airline needed to conduct a thorough evaluation and make improvements to its way of handling flights during typhoons. He explained that EVA usually collected all the necessary information and passed it on to a team of experts who discussed during several meetings how to proceed. Even though a way had been found which complied with safety standards, the weather contained many variables, and this time, the flights had come under scrutiny from the public, Lin said.
The chairman said his airline would consider and value opinions, suggestions and criticisms from the public, the media, professional organizations and company staff. In the end, the airline would be even more careful to offer safe, comfortable and trustworthy service, Lin said.
During Typhoon Megi, dozens of flights, including some by EVA, had been canceled, rescheduled or diverted to other airports.
