Average age of first sex in Taiwan 18.9: study

Most Taiwanese lost their virginity at the age of 18.9, according to a recent study by Durex’s Face of Global Sex report.

The study looked into the average age people first engage in sexual intercourse across 44 countries around the world, among which Iceland's citizens ranked the youngest, losing their virginity at an average age of 15.6 years, while Malaysians lost their virginity relatively late, after age 23 on average.

According to the study, youth in other Scandinavian countries including Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland all had their first sexual experience at the age of 16.

Taiwan came in 14th place with an average of 18.9.

On the other hand, people in most Southeast Asian countries had their first sexual experience after 20, including Malaysia (23), India (22.9), Singapore (22.8), and Thailand (20.5). China and Hong Kong both held out until the age of 22.1 and 20.2, respectively.

In mid October, a survey released by the Taiwan AIDS Society indicated that 19.4 percent of young adults in Taiwan had sex with someone other than their partners (wife/ girlfriend/ husband/ boyfriend), while 8.7 percent had sex with someone they met that same day and 51.7 of repsondents reporting not using a condom, exposing themselves to the risk of HIV infection.
