Saints cut kicker and punter

The New Orleans Saints have released Australian punter Ben Graham and kicker Taylor Mehlhaff, leaving the team to spend its bye week trying to fill each position for a third time this season.

Team officials confirmed the cuts Tuesday night.

Graham replaced Steve Weatherford, who was cut after the Saints' loss to Carolina on Oct. 19, but made only one appearance for the Saints came last Sunday in London. He punted three times, averaging 42 yards.

It has been a tumultuous year for Graham, a former star in the Australian rules Australian Football League with the Geelong Cats.

Last month, he was released by the New York Jets _ twice.

Graham, who will turn 35 on Sunday, was cut after a poor outing in New York's loss to New England on Sept. 16 only to be re-signed a few days later, then was again let go by the Jets.

He had two punts for a 48-yard average in a 56-35 victory over Arizona on Sunday, and dropped his only two kicks against San Diego last Monday inside the Chargers' 20-yard line with no returns. Still, the Jets weren't completely satisfied.

Mehlhaff, who the Saints drafted last spring but cut after training camp, was brought back to replace injured kicker Martin Gramatica in Week 6. In three games since, Mehlhaff was 3-of-4 on field goals and 9-of-10 on extra points.

He missed an extra point in last Sunday's 37-32 victory in London over the San Diego Chargers.
