TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - Former President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) walked out of the Special Investigation Panel (SIP) after six hours of questioning at 4:30pm. Chen threw his hands in the air to show his handcuffs to reporters and the pubic while shouting "political persecution" (政治迫害) and "Go Taiwan" (台灣加油) as he walked out of the SIP and set out for the Taipei District Court as prosecutors filed a request to detain him.As predicted by Chen himself last night, he said that the prosecutors would file a request to detain him and the Taipei District Court would grant the request for detention. As of press time, we know that prosecutors have filed the detention request, but whether the court will approve the request to detain Chen is still yet to be disclosed later this evening.
Many supporters of Chen blasted the skewed justice system towards the persecution of former president, who has alleged that he has never been involved in any money laundering activities.
Chen received a subpoena yesterday and was summoned for the fifth time by the SIP this morning for his alleged role in the money-laundering probe. As of press time, Chen has now been sent to the Taipei District Court to contest a detention hearing.
Prosecutors sought Chen's detention as they believed he had offended against the anti-money laundering act. Also, because of the seriousness of the case, prosecutors sought to detain Chen in order to prevent him from tampering with evidence.
The Prosecutors Office's act to seek the court's approval to detain Chen given the egregious crimes that Chen has allegedly committed and engaged, including the misuse of the state affairs fund, money laundering, corruption, and many other corrupt practices have captured the attention of the entire world, including the US, China, Japan, and many other nations.
