Indonesia records 113th bird flu death

Indonesian health officials say a 15-year-old girl died of bird flu, raising the death toll in the country hardest hit by the virus to 113 since it re-emerged in Asia in 2003.

Agus Suryanto, who headed the team of doctors treating the patient, said the girl was from the eastern city of Semarang and died late last week after 10 days in hospital.

Local health chief Tatik Suryanti said tests for the H5N1 virus came back positive Wednesday.

Officials believe she became infected after coming into contact with sick poultry. She lived near a chicken slaughterhouse.

Bird flu is relatively hard for humans to catch, but scientists are watching the virus because it could mutate into a human strain that might spark a flu pandemic, potentially killing millions.
