President Ma Ying-jeou has joined more than 10,000 Taiwanese at a calligraphy event to promote the use of traditional Chinese characters.

Ma says the 2,000-year-old characters are a valuable part of Chinese heritage but have been ignored by Chinese communists.

Ma urged Chinese people to learn the traditional characters in addition to the simplified form adopted on the mainland.

He said at the New Year's Day event Thursday that Taiwanese well versed in the language are able to read classical Chinese books and truly appreciate the culture.

The characters are still used by some 50 million people, including those in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
