A Madagascar opposition leader says he is handing over mayoral duties to an aide, despite a government announcement that he has been fired. The police minister announced Andry Rajoelina's replacement as the mayor of the capital Antananarivo Tuesday. The only official reason given was that Rajoelina had neglected his duties. Rajoelina said his dismissal was illegal.
Addressing thousands of supporters Wednesday, Rajoelina claimed an aide was taking over because he had "other tasks and responsibilities."
His designation of his aide was unlikely to be recognized by the national government.
Rajoelina's calls for the country's president to resign have sparked deadly violence. Rajoelina accuses the president of misspending money and threatening democracy.
