Madagascar's president and opposition leader have agreed to try to calm tensions after weeks of violent demonstrations in the Indian Ocean island.President Marc Ravalomanana and Andry Rajoelina held church-mediated talks and on Saturday announced a series of measures to halt the turmoil, including an end to looting, demonstrations and political arrests.
They say they will have more talks to settle their differences.
Rajoelina accuses the president of misspending funds and says he is responsible for the deaths of at least 25 civilians killed by police fire during a Feb. 7 protest. In late January, opposition protests also sparked deadly riots.
