An Algerian security official says two guards were killed and four others injured when two homemade bombs exploded in the restive Kabylie region. The official says suspected Islamists set the bombs near the guard's base in the town of Takeroubt. They used remote controls to detonate them as a patrol was entering the site Tuesday morning.
A firefight then broke out and the Islamists slipped away, the official said.
The victims were aged 38 and 40, said the official. He spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with police policy.
Algeria has been battling Islamic extremists since 1992, the start of a near civil war that killed an estimated 200,000 people. The strongest remaining extremist group is now affiliated with al-Qaida.
