Prosecutors in Venezuela are investigating the deaths of three inmates and one guard killed during a prison riot.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the riot that broke out on Tuesday inside Yare Prison, but most of the riots that occur in Venezuela's prisons are spurred by conflict between rival gangs.

The Attorney General's Office issued a statement on Wednesday saying that nine inmates and a sergeant belonging to the National Guard died in the violence. The statement said other inmates suffered injuries, but it did not specify how many were hurt.

As in many other countries in the region, violence is common in Venezuela's overcrowded and understaffed prisons.
