A custody battle over a 5-year-old boy has sparked a diplomatic dispute between Russia and Finland.

Russia's foreign minister protested to his Finnish counterpart after the boy's Finnish father brought him from Russia to Finland this month without permission from his Russian mother.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said Friday that the boy's removal was a "rude violation of Russian law."

He said Russia was incensed that the Finnish consulate in St. Petersburg had helped the boy and his father and that a consular employee had taken them to Finland in his car.

Finnish Consul General Olli Perheentupa said the boy is a Finnish citizen whose mother brought him to Russia illegally last year.
