Finland launches appeal for Baltic Sea clean up

Finland is urging countries surrounding the Baltic Sea to help clean up one of the most polluted marine environments in the world.

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen says governments and private companies must join forces because "the state of the sea is alarming."

He gave a speech Tuesday to Baltic Sea representatives Vanhanen invited government leaders to a Baltic Sea Action Summit in Helsinki in February.

The nine Baltic Sea nations are Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Denmark.
