All the tableware made of melamine resin tested positive for the toxic melamine found in Chinese dairy products last year, the Consumers' Foundation said yesterday. The foundation tested 20 products, most of them manufactured in China, and found that all of them contained excessive amounts of the melamine which late last year caused a worldwide scare after it was found in dairy products and protein from China. Melamine levels in the plates, bowls and spoons reached values as high as 20 parts per million, far higher levels than recorded in foods, the foundation said.
The tests used a Japanese standard by heating the products up to 95C for half an hour and measuring the materials released during the melting process.
In daily use, the toxic can be released when the material comes in contact with hot food such as soup or when it is scratched.
In addition, the foundation also found that eight of the tested samples, or 40 percent, did not contain the warning that melamine resin products should not be microwaved. Stainless steel and ceramics are the main valid alternatives, the foundation recommended.
