Girl with Down syndrome gets new home in U.S.

Taipei, June 2 (CNA) After five years of efforts, the Pingtung county government in southern Taiwan has finally found a new home in the United States for a 7-year-old girl with Down syndrome who was born into a severely dysfunctional family, a local charity said Tuesday.

"The girl, identified as Sunny, will soon settle in the state of Massachusetts along with her adoptive American parents, " said an executive with the Pingtung chapter of the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (TFCF).

The charity, which collaborated with the county government to arrange the child's adoption, organized a farewell party for Sunny Tuesday, the eve of her departure for her new life in America.

At the party, Sunny, who has spent most of her life in foster care, met with her new parents -- James Lindsay, a high school teacher, and his wife Kelly, a homemaker.

The couple has three birth children, but have wide experience with physically and mentally challenged people, including time spent caring for three other children with Down syndrome, so they were very willing to take Sunny into their family.

According to a TFCF executive, Sunny, a first grader at a local elementary school, has good academic records as she has received government-subsidized medical treatments over the past few years to increase her intelligence, health and ability.
