Top Mafia boss arrives in Italy
Associated Press
2009-07-01 09:37 PM
Police officials say a convicted organized crime boss dubbed the "Mafia's foreign minister" has been extradited to Italy and immediately taken to prison.

Salvatore Miceli landed at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport after a flight from Caracas, Venezuela.

Capt. Antonello Parasiliti in Trapani, Sicily, said the 63-year-old was handcuffed and escorted by Venezuelan police. Parasiliti declined to say where Miceli was taken, but Italian news agency ANSA reported he was taken to Civitavecchia near Rome.

Miceli was arrested earlier this month in Caracas. He was convicted on charges of international drug trafficking and Mafia association. Investigators say he worked as a middleman between Italian and South American organized crime groups and had been a fugitive since 2001.
