Taiwan and China are in informal talks at an "academic level" on preparing an economic cooperation agreement, the island's Deputy Economic Affairs Minister John Deng said."We hope that we can start the formal process as soon as possible," Deng told reporters in Taipei yesterday. "We are ready, it's Beijing; if they want to talk, we can talk," he said. President Ma Ying-jeou said in May that he hopes to sign an Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement with China to ease restrictions on trade. The agreement may be similar to an accord the mainland has with Hong Kong, which waives tariffs and gives preferential market access for its financial industry.
