New York Yankees starter Wang Chien-ming has been put on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain, and manager Joe Girardi said he's not sure when to expect him back.

Girardi said yesterday that Wang won't begin throwing until at least after the All-Star break.

Wang allowed four runs and six hits before being replaced in the sixth inning Sunday, then went for an MRI exam that revealed the shoulder strain and bursitis.

He also missed time earlier this season with weakness in the adductor muscles in his hips, but had been better of late and earned his first win in his previous start.

Girardi said he's not sure who will start in Wang's place on Thursday. The Yankees recalled reliever Jonathan Albaladejo from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill his roster spot.

The Yankees hope the extra rest will allow Wang to strengthen his injured shoulder, but they offered no timetable for his possible return.

“He has a shoulder strain and they want to give it rest and a chance to build back up again,” Manager Joe Girardi said.

Wang is scheduled to begin throwing again on July 17, but Girardi said it was too soon to determine when he might pitch again. Girardi said the Yankees “don’t know how he’s going to respond” after the rest.

Girardi would not speculate who might start in place of Wang against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, but he stressed that it will not be Phil Hughes. Since Hughes has been pitching in relief, Girardi does not think he is ready to throw enough pitches to start.

Wang said he was encouraged that he “just strained the muscle,” but he is clearly going to be out for a while.

Meanwhile, Tigers Taiwanese reliever Ni Fu-te continued to give stable outing for the team in Detroit, who threw two scoreless innings in relief during the team’s 6-2 loss to Minnesota Twins today.

Of the 44 pitches Ni threw in the game, 29 of them were strikes. He also strikeouts three batters, allowing three hits, walk none. His ERA is lowered to 1.80.

Ni has now appeared in 4 games in the MLB. He has a total of 7 strikeouts from only 5 innings.
