Taipei, July 8 (CNA) Two hundred young people, ages 11-18, from poor families in Taiwan will be given free orthodontic treatment under a NT$24-million project launched jointly by two local organizations, the Taiwan Association of Orthodontists announced Wednesday.

The Taiwan Fund for Children and Families will select the 200 recipients, while dentists from the orthodontist association will perform the procedures, the association's director Hung Ching-hiu said at a press conference.

A taekwondo student and sixth grader at Taitung Peinan Elementary School, Chung Hsiu-jung, was chosen as the first recipient under the program.

Director of the Taitung Dental Association Chiu Heng-cheng said he has customized a set of clear braces for Chung and will endeavor to give her a confident smile after two years of dental work. The braces, which cost NT$200,000, were ordered from the U.S., he said.
