Dutch court jails 14 for Chinese embassy protest

The Hague District Court has convicted 14 protesters for throwing stones at the Chinese Embassy and has sentenced them to jail terms ranging from a week to 10 days.

Police arrested 142 demonstrators, some of them Uighur exiles, when they pelted the embassy with rocks and eggs on Monday to protest China's crackdown in Xinjiang province.

Virtually every window in the embassy building facing the street was shattered.

Prosecutors said Thursday that police released 110 demonstrators without charge and the remaining 18 are to appear in court at a later date.

China says 156 people were killed and more than 1,100 people hurt as Muslim Uighurs ran amok in Xinjiang's capital Urumqi on Sunday. Uighurs say security forces gunned down many of those killed.
